  • THE SENIOR DIVISIONAL OFFICER FOR MENCHUM DIVISION,
  • THE DIVISIONAL OFFICER WUM SUB DIVISION,
  • THE SENATOR MENCHUM DIVISION,
  • THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT MENCHUM SOUTH CONSTITUENCY,
  • THE DIVISIONAL DELEGATE OF WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AND THE FAMILY,
  • DIVISIONAL DELEGATES AND SERVICE HEADS,
  • LEADERS OF LEGALISED POLITICAL PARTIES,
  • TRADITIONAL AND RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES,
  • DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMENT;

It is with great honour and enthusiasm for me to address the women folk of Wum on this great Day of peace, hope and solidarity for women. The International Women’s day was ordained by the United Nation’s Organization as a day to celebrate the Dignity of the Woman, promote and encourage the woman in all facets of life. It is incumbent on me therefore, on this unique day for the woman to welcome all of you and to say in addition, congratulation to those dignified women.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen;
God created the woman to accompany the man because God knew that creation will be incomplete without the woman. Therefore man and woman are bound to live together, complement each other for the advancement of society. Unfortunately in many societies especially in Africa and Asia, women are treated as second class citizens, good only for taking care of the kitchen and nursing children. She has been reduced to the level of an object which can be disposed of at any time. It is common practice to get a man tell the wife – Susana when I am talking you also talk? Do you know that I used my money to buy you from your father? If you talk again, you will go back to your father, and he has to pay back my money. This is regrettable because a woman is a human being that no amount of money can buy. We must therefore accompany the women succeed as per the theme of this year’s celebration “Challenges and achievements of the millennium Development Goals on Women and girls”.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen;
The legendary singer Bob Marley said “Until the Basic Human Rights are equally guaranteed to all without regards to sex, gender and Race the world shall never know peace but war”. I therefore thank government for the many legal instruments and structures put in place aimed at protecting the rights and dignity of women. This can be exemplified by the creation of the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family as well as our constitution which states that “Every person shall have the same rights and obligations”. It is therefore, our obligation to help women attain economic, political, social and educational empowerment and emancipation. President J.F Kennedy of America remarked that “Human problems are created by man and they can only be resolved by man”. In this light, I call on the women of Wum to rise up in unism and be the first solution to your own problems, be the first advocates against the various forms of injustices perpetuated against you. There is nothing a man can do that you cannot do. I expect in the days ahead to have in this municipality female bike riders, shoe menders, barbers, builders, carpenters, truck pushers, mechanics, welders, you may name the rest. After all, Jimmy Dean says “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination”.
Today our parliament is made up of 40 percent women, many women are today in government and above all, I recall President Catherine Samba Panza of the Central African Republic, President Ellen Johnson Serlif of Liberia, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Cristiana of Argentina, Madam Zuma of the A.U just to name these few. These are women who have left respectable footprints in the sand of time. I therefore, call on the Wum women to emulate their charisma, for power is never given but seized. Unfortunately and paradoxically, the worst forms of injustices against women are being promoted by women themselves.

My dear women, ladies and gentlemen;
May you bear in mind that the international women’s day is not a day for women to drink from one morning to another, a day to challenge and abuse your husband in the house but a day to reflect, create awareness and seek solutions to issues confronting women. The man despite his attitude at times remains your umbrella in the rainy days. After all, Babylon is a strange land and it represents problems! But most times the way to the promise land is through Babylon.
While wishing you a sumptuous celebration, our gold is our continuous efforts for a prosperous and united Wum Municipality.

                                      Long live the International Women’s Day
                                      Long live the Wum Municipality
                                      Long live Cameroon
